Wester Banchory

The Roman fort at Wester Banchory sits quietly on the landscape a few miles north of Perth, and unless you know what you're looking for, you might drive straight past it. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no queue of tourists with cameras - just the earthworks themselves, visible as a series of low ridges and ditches if the light catches them right.

This is proper archaeology, the kind that rewards a bit of homework before you arrive. The fort was built around 80 AD during the Roman push into Scotland, and what remains are the defensive ditches and ramparts that once protected a garrison. It's small compared to some Roman sites down south, but standing here you get a real sense of how the legions moved through Perthshire, consolidating control over territory that was far from straightforward to hold.

Walking enthusiasts will appreciate this more than casual visitors - there's no formal path, and you'll be picking your way across fields to see the features properly. It's not a morning's entertainment for young kids unless they're genuinely keen on Romans. Give yourself an hour if you're serious about it, longer if you're photographing or sketching.

It works well as part of a broader archaeological tour of the area. Base yourself at Beech Hedge or Blairgowrie Holiday Park - both solid choices within easy driving distance - and combine this with visits to other Perthshire Roman sites. Free to visit, naturally.
