West Street Car Park

West Street Car Park in Retford is technically a car park, but it's also the gateway to a proper nature reserve that most visitors drive straight past. The site sits right on the edge of town and gives you access to wetland and grassland habitat that's genuinely worth an hour of your time if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Little Oak Camping or Hallcroft Fishery.

You'll find ponds, reed beds, and open grassland - the sort of place where you might spot dragonflies in summer or migrating birds in spring and autumn. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no boardwalks or visitor centres. But that's rather the point. This is for people who actually want to see nature doing its thing, not for those chasing Instagram shots.

Birders and keen naturalists will get more from it than families with young children - there's walking but nothing spectacular, and kids will likely lose interest after half an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting species. The car park itself is free and straightforward. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're just having a gentle wander, longer if you've got binoculars and patience.

It works well as a morning activity before heading to Sundown Adventureland or Wild Acre Village for something with more bells on. February to May is best for birds. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring dog walkers who don't always keep their pets under control.
