West Sands

The beach at West Sands, just outside Hunstanton, stretches for miles in both directions - proper Norfolk coast, all golden sand and wide open sky. At high tide it narrows considerably, but at low tide you've got this vast expanse of firm sand that's brilliant for walking. The cliffs behind are modest compared to what you'll see elsewhere on this stretch, but there's something appealing about the relative quietness of the place.

It's a straightforward seaside spot. Families come here to dig holes and splash about, walkers use it as part of the coastal path, and on a decent day the light's worth hanging around for. Dog walkers particularly love the space - you can let them run without worrying too much about crowds. The sand here is genuinely pleasant to walk on, not heavy or silty like some Norfolk beaches.

Timing matters. Low tide opens up the beach considerably, which is when it's worth a proper visit. Summer weekends will be busier, though nothing like some spots further south. Hunstanton itself has cafes and fish and chips if you're peckish, though facilities directly at the beach are minimal.

For those staying at one of the nearby parks - Wild Luxury is barely a mile away, Searles Leisure Resort three and a half - West Sands makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. It's not a full-day destination on its own, but it slots nicely into a Norfolk coast break. Good shoes or boots for the walk across the sand at low tide, and check tide times before you head down.
