West Hunsbury Country Park

The Iron Age hill fort dominates the landscape here - you can spot the ancient earthworks from the car park before you've even properly arrived. West Hunsbury sits just south of Northampton and delivers exactly what a country park should: decent walking trails, open grassland, and enough history to keep grown-ups engaged without boring the kids stiff.

The main draw is the fort itself. Walking the ramparts gives you a proper sense of scale, and on a clear day the views across Northamptonshire are genuinely worth the climb. The park also has meadow walks that work well for families - nothing too strenuous, and children usually enjoy spotting the butterflies and birds without needing to be convinced they're having educational fun.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, which feels about right unless you're keen on archaeology or bring binoculars. It's free to visit, which is always a plus. The grassland can get muddy in winter, so pick your moment.

If you're camping at Kirkely Meadows or The Home Farm CL nearby, this makes an easy morning or afternoon slot. It's not dramatic enough to anchor an entire holiday around, but as part of a broader park visit in the Northampton area, it fills a gap nicely. Worth the detour if you're already heading this way.
