West Girt Hill

The walk up West Girt Hill takes about forty minutes from Lochwinnoch, and honestly, it's one of those walks that surprises you. You're in Renfrewshire, not particularly high ground by Scottish standards, yet the views across the Lowlands stretch for miles once you've gained the ridge. The path itself is straightforward moorland terrain - nothing technical, but it does climb properly, so wear decent boots.

What you get at the top is a genuine sense of accomplishment without the mountaineering faff. On a clear day you can see right across to the Clyde Valley. The Lowlands roll out in front of you in a way that makes you understand why people bothered settling here centuries ago. It's not dramatic, but it's proper rewarding.

The nearest accommodation is The Pods at Auchenhean, about five miles away - a decent spot for a base if you're doing a few walks in the area. West Girt Hill works perfectly as a morning excursion before heading back for lunch. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it; anyone expecting an easy stroll should pick something flatter instead.

Bring a packed lunch, decent waterproofs, and go midweek if you can. The hill doesn't get rammed like the Trossachs or Ben Lomond, which means you'll actually have space to think. Free to access, obviously - it's a hill.
