West End Beacon

The West End Beacon sits on high ground just outside Southampton, a proper piece of Hampshire's coastal defences that actually rewards the trip out. It's a signal station - one of a chain built to warn of invasion - and you can still see the structure clearly enough to understand how it worked. Not massive, mind you. You're looking at a modest stone tower that's been through the centuries, but that's rather the point: it's genuine and unmanicured, which beats a lot of heritage sites hands down.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. The mechanics of how beacon networks operated across the south coast is genuinely clever - fire by day, smoke signals by night - and standing where the operator once stood gives you a feel for that urgency. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming if you're expecting theme park thrills, though the climbable sections (if accessible when you visit) hold their interest for a bit. The views across the area aren't spectacular, but they're pleasant enough.

It's a free visit, and you'll spend twenty minutes here maximum. No facilities to speak of, so plan accordingly. If you're staying at Sunnydale Farm Caravan Park or Mercury Holiday Park, it's barely a detour - both are within five miles - and fits nicely into a morning before heading into Southampton proper or exploring the wider New Forest region. Best visited in clear weather; there's not much to do here if it's bucketing down.
