West Close Copse

A proper little woodland tucked just outside Swindon, West Close Copse is the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's not vast - you're looking at a managed forest rather than some sprawling wilderness - but there's something satisfying about it. The paths wind through mixed woodland, and in spring and early summer it's genuinely lovely underfoot with the light filtering through the canopy.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's ideal for a solid hour's ramble without the slog of bigger reserves, and the ground is usually decent even after rain. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so - there aren't many dramatic viewpoints or destinations within, just trees and the gentle sound of the place.

The real bonus is how it sits alongside a proper park holiday in the area. If you're based at Park Farm Campsite just down the road, West Close makes for a straightforward morning walk before moving on to bigger attractions. It's the sort of place that rounds out a day rather than anchoring one.

Access appears to be unrestricted, and there's no charge to use it. The nearest car park or formal entrance arrangements aren't entirely clear from the ground, so best approach from the Swindon side and scout the footpaths in. Worth an hour, not worth planning your entire trip around.
