West Chiltington Windmill

The windmill at West Chiltington is a proper Sussex landmark - a Grade II listed structure that rises above the village like something from a postcard. Built in the 18th century, it's a working reminder of the area's agricultural past, and you can see why locals are protective of it. The brick tower stands solid and handsome, and on a clear day the views across the Weald towards Pulborough are genuinely worth the walk out here.

It's not a major attraction with guided tours or a visitor centre - this is more about appreciating the building itself and understanding how the landscape used to function. History enthusiasts will get something from it; casual drivers passing through might feel they've ticked a box and moved on. For families with young kids, it's a decent detour if you're already in the village, but you won't spend hours here.

The real benefit of visiting is combining it with the holiday parks nearby. Cattlestone Farm and Goweco Glamping are both within a couple of miles and offer proper places to base yourself. Knepp Wildland Safaris, just over four miles away, is worth the journey alone - the contrast between the working windmill and that wilder landscape sums up Sussex nicely. If you're staying in the area for a few days, West Chiltington Windmill makes sense as part of a larger loop exploring Pulborough and the villages around it. Don't go out of your way specially, but if you're in the district, seek it out.
