Wensleydale Railway

The old railway line from Northallerton through Wensleydale is properly something special if you're into trains or just fancy a different way to see the dale. The volunteers who run it have restored vintage carriages and engines so you're riding in actual history - the kind of journey your grandparents might have taken decades ago. You'll rattle through some gorgeous countryside, past stone villages and moorland, with decent views from the windows if you bag a seat on the right side. The round trip takes a few hours depending on which route you choose, so it's a solid half-day outing rather than a quick pit stop. Kids tend to go mad for it, though fair warning: if they're expecting theme park thrills, they'll be disappointed. This is gentle, slow travel. Families staying at Pembroke Caravan Park - just down the road from Northallerton - could easily make a morning or afternoon of it without the drive hassle. The railway also works well between visits to Kiplin Country Park or Camp Kátur Glamping if you're basing yourself further out. Admission isn't free (you'll pay per ticket), but the money keeps the whole operation going. Go mid-week in summer if you can - weekends get rammed with heritage railway enthusiasts. Weather matters here: a damp Yorkshire day through the windows loses some charm, so check the forecast. It's worth doing once, especially if you've got children or you're genuinely interested in rail history. Just don't expect cutting-edge thrills.
