Welton Recreation Ground

The Welton Recreation Ground sits just outside Daventry and feels like the sort of place locals have known about for years while visitors drive straight past. It's a proper nature reserve - nothing flashy, just grassland, hedgerows, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it exists anymore.

What you get here depends entirely on what you're after. Walkers will find decent paths threading through the meadows, and the bird life is genuinely worth paying attention to if you've got binoculars. Spring and early summer are when it sings - literally. The wildflowers put on a decent show too, though you'll need to come at the right time of year to catch them properly. It's the sort of place where you might spot skylarks, which have become rarer than they should be.

This isn't a destination that'll keep you entertained for a full day, and that's fine. It's better suited to a two-hour ramble if you're staying nearby, or a quick detour if you're passing through Daventry. Families with young children might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in. Birdwatchers and people interested in meadow ecology will get more from it.

If you're camped at Whitefeather Campsite just up the road, the Recreation Ground makes a pleasant morning walk without needing to pile everyone into the car. No entrance fee that I could find, and you're free to wander whenever. Come early on a weekend if you want any solitude - by lunchtime on summer Sundays it fills up with locals doing exactly what you're doing.
