Waughton Castle

The ruins sit on a low rise just outside Dunbar, overlooking farmland that stretches toward the coast. What remains of Waughton Castle is modest - stone walls, some reconstruction work - but the setting tells the story better than the stones themselves.

This was a stronghold of the Hepburn family, one of East Lothian's more influential clans, and you can still read the bones of medieval defensive design even if the roof's long gone. The walls are sturdy enough that you're looking at proper 15th-century work, not Victorian fancy. Visiting is straightforward: free access, open to the elements, no facilities, so bring a jacket. Allow thirty minutes to wander and soak it in - longer if you're the type to sit on the grass and imagine border skirmishes.

History buffs will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring East Lothian's castles and fortifications. Families with young children might find it a quick stop rather than a main event - there's not much to climb or explore once you've walked the perimeter.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy detour during a morning drive inland. The real appeal is combining it with other local sites - Dunbar Castle itself is closer to town and more dramatically sited. Waughton works best as part of a broader castle-hopping afternoon rather than a destination in itself, but the isolation and farmland views make it feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from a proper town.
