Watnall Wood

Walk into Watnall Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where sunlight filters through in green-tinted shafts and the ground squelches underfoot after rain. It's dense woodland, genuinely quiet, the sort of place where you notice birdsong instead of ignoring it.

The wood itself isn't vast - you can walk through it in under an hour if you're just pottering about - but it's dense enough to feel like genuine countryside despite being only a few miles from Nottingham's sprawl. There are paths threading through, though they're not manicured or signposted to death, which means it keeps that slightly wild edge.

This is where families with older kids will have the best time. Younger ones might find it a bit monotonous after thirty minutes - it's trees and more trees, no sudden clearings or dramatic vistas. But if you're a serious walker or a photographer after that dappled-light, moss-covered-log kind of shot, you'll linger. Birdwatchers will absolutely get it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - bring water, wear decent boots if the ground's boggy. Golden Valley Caravan and Camping Park sits just five miles south, making Watnall Wood an easy add-on for a forest walk during a caravan holiday in the area. It's not a destination on its own, but it's a proper slice of Derbyshire woodland that saves you from feeling completely landlocked near Nottingham.
