Waterloo Wood

Walking into Waterloo Wood feels like stepping backwards about a century. The mature beech and oak trees tower overhead, their trunks thick enough that you'd need three people holding hands to wrap around them. It's the sort of place where the light filters through the canopy in dusty golden shafts and the ground is soft with decades of leaf mould.

This is proper woodland walking territory. The paths meander without too much of a gradient, making it suitable for families with older kids and anyone who just wants a gentle ramble. You're looking at between thirty minutes to two hours depending on how many of the routes you fancy tackling. There's something genuinely peaceful about it - no theme park atmosphere, no crowds, just trees and the occasional sound of birds.

The wood sits just outside Eye, a modest market town that serves as a useful base if you're exploring Suffolk. If you're staying at Hill Farm Suffolk, you're only a short drive away, so it works well as a morning or late afternoon activity between the park's facilities.

This isn't for people after dramatic vistas or rare plants. But if you want somewhere to clear your head and let the kids burn off energy without the noise of more managed attractions, Waterloo Wood delivers. The main limitation is that it's essentially a walk through woods - perfectly nice, but it doesn't overstay its welcome.
