Water Mill Basin

Water Mill Basin is a proper working nature reserve just outside Horncastle, where the River Wraggle widens into a shallow pool surrounded by reed beds and willow scrub. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk with binoculars rather than a quick tick-box visit.

The basin itself draws wading birds, especially in winter and during migration seasons. Expect curlew, redshank, and if you're lucky, the odd rarer visitor. The footpath loops round the water's edge - nothing strenuous, but muddy in winter so proper boots are worth bringing. Most people spend between 45 minutes and two hours here, depending on how serious they are about birdwatching.

It works best for keen birders and wildlife photographers rather than young children who might find standing still quite boring. If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Woodhall Spa Camping or Treetop Hideaways, it's an easy morning outing to fit between other plans. Late afternoon light is particularly good if the sun cooperates.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the marshland. The site is managed for conservation first and tourism second, which honestly is refreshing. It's worth combining with a wander round Horncastle town itself, which has some decent antique shops and pubs worth knowing about. Not the most dramatic nature reserve in the Midlands, but genuinely peaceful on a quiet day.
