Water Meadows

The path alongside Water Meadows opens up gradually, the reedy margins coming into focus as you walk east from Fakenham. It's a proper Norfolk wetland - the sort of place where you'll spot marsh harriers quartering the grass and hear reed warblers before you see them. The meadows themselves shift with the seasons: waterlogged and alive with lapwings in spring, dried back and golden by late summer.

This isn't a spectacle in the traditional sense. There are no viewpoints with benches, no interpretive boards spelling it all out. What you get instead is the genuine article - a working nature reserve where the wildlife comes first and visitors come second. Keen birders will spend hours here with binoculars and a notebook. Families with young kids might manage 45 minutes before restlessness sets in, unless you're the type who get properly excited about identifying a sedge warbler.

The walking is flat and accessible, which works in its favour. Bring decent footwear though - after rain the paths can be boggy. Early morning is when you'll see the most, before the heat of the day pushes things into cover.

If you're based at Ashcroft Glamping nearby, Water Meadows is the obvious addon to a Norfolk break focused on nature and walking. It complements rather than competes with bigger attractions - realistic expectations matter here. This is serious habitat, not a leisure destination dressed up as one.
