Watcombe's Covert

A proper woodland walk that doesn't take itself too seriously. Watcombe's Covert sits just outside Cheltenham, a mixed forest where locals come to clear their heads rather than tick off a checklist. The trees here are tall enough to feel like you've left the town behind, even though you're only twenty minutes from the high street.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're camping at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and need a half-day outing without driving far. The paths wind through broadleaf woodland - nothing manicured or over-managed, which is rather refreshing. You'll spot bluebells in spring, and the canopy's thick enough in summer to keep things cool. Allow ninety minutes for a decent wander without rushing.

Families with kids who actually enjoy trees and fresh air will do well here. If your children expect theme parks or visitor centres, they'll be bored within ten minutes. Adults get far more from it - the quiet, the moss, the decent walking tracks that don't feel crowded even on weekends. Bring proper boots though; it can get boggy after rain.

The covert is free to access, which is one less thing to worry about. It's best visited autumn through spring when the paths dry out and you won't be battling midges. Peak summer can feel a touch claustrophobic under all that leaf cover. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't plan a trip to Cheltenham purely for this.
