Warren Wood

The beech and oak trees in Warren Wood rise up thick and tall, blocking out most of the sky on even the brightest days. It's a proper forest walk, not a manicured park - the kind of place where you'll actually feel like you've stepped away from things. Near Hitchin, it's easy to reach but still feels genuinely tucked away.

You can wander through here for an hour or two depending on how serious you want to get about it. The woodland floor is uneven, roots everywhere, so decent boots help. There are paths that loop back on themselves, which is handy if you're not in the mood for navigation. Spring is when it really comes alive - bluebells across the forest floor, birds properly singing. Summer's fine too, though it gets a bit muggy under all that canopy.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there's no playground or café at the end of it - but if your lot are the type to hunt for bugs and climb fallen trees, they'll be occupied. Don't expect photo opportunities; it's working woodland, not Instagram material.

Stay at Almshoe Glamping just 2.7 miles away and you can head out here on a whim. Jacks Hill Caravans is a bit further but still manageable as a day trip. It's the sort of place to visit when the weather's decent but you can't face another attraction. Sometimes that's exactly what a park holiday needs.
