Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter

The moment you walk into the backlot at Leavesden Studios, just outside Watford, you're standing on actual Harry Potter sets. Not replicas - the real deal. The Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley, the Dursley's kitchen - they're all here, weather-beaten and authentic, exactly as they were during filming.

You'll spend a good four to five hours moving through sound stages and outdoor areas, handling props, seeing costumes up close, and getting genuinely insight into how the films were made. There's the Gringotts vault, the Potions classroom, Dumbledore's office. Even non-readers find it absorbing because it's fundamentally about craftsmanship and scale - the sets are massive, the detail staggering.

For Potter-obsessed families, this is the pilgrimage. Kids aged eight and up tend to get it properly; younger ones might find the size and pace a bit much. If you're indifferent to the franchise, you'll find it slow going.

It's not cheap and booking in advance is essential - tickets sell out, especially school holidays. Allow a full day. The studio cafe is functional but overpriced, so bring snacks.

If you're basing yourselves at Home Farm Glamping or North Hill Farm for a Hertfordshire park holiday, this is the obvious day trip from Watford. It justifies the drive, but go in expecting a theme park experience rather than a museum. That said, it's well done, and the sets genuinely impress.
