Warklaw Hill

The walk up Warklaw Hill from Newbridge takes about 45 minutes if you're reasonably fit, and it's one of those Scottish hills that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you thoroughly once you're up there. The summit sits at 380 metres, which sounds modest until you realise how much of the Lowlands spreads out below - you can see right across to the Pentlands on a clear day, and the view west towards Linlithgow Palace is genuinely impressive.

It's a walker's hill, no question. The ground can be boggy after rain, and there's no café at the top, so bring your own provisions. The path is reasonably clear once you find the start, though a map is sensible if the weather closes in. For families, it's doable with kids aged eight or above - steep in patches but not technical.

What makes it work is the isolation from the tourist trail. You won't find crowds or gift shops, just good views and proper hill air. If you're staying at Linwater Caravan Park nearby, it's an obvious afternoon outing. The park itself sits well for exploring the area's quieter walks, and Warklaw sits perfectly if you want something with a bit more height than the gentler riverside strolls closer to Newbridge.

Free to visit, of course. Allow two to three hours return. Spring and early autumn are best - winter can make it slippery, and summer midges can be punishing on still days.
