Wargary Wood

The woodland around Wargary isn't going to blow your mind with dramatic vistas or rare plants - it's properly understated stuff. But that's rather the point. You get decent paths threading through mixed broadleaf forest, the kind of walk that takes forty minutes to an hour and leaves you feeling like you've actually been somewhere without the crowds you'd find at bigger beauty spots.

It works well if you're based near Bideford and want to stretch your legs between days at the coast. The trees create decent shelter from wind and rain, which matters in Cornwall. Families with young walkers will manage fine here - nothing too strenuous, and kids tend to enjoy the simple pleasure of kicking through woodland without having to pose for photos every five minutes.

You'll want to allow an hour or so if you're doing a proper circuit rather than just a quick dash through. The forest floor can get muddy after wet weather, so decent boots are worthwhile. There's no visitor facility that I'm aware of, so bring water if you're planning a longer ramble.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Coastal Cabins Glamping and Roeys Retreat are both very close - this makes for a solid morning activity. It pairs well with coastal walking around Bideford itself. Not a destination in its own right, but genuinely useful if you're already in the area and need a break from sand and salt.
