Waresley and Gransden Woods

Two separate woods straddling the border between Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, each offering something different depending on what you're after. Waresley Wood is the smaller of the pair - a proper ancient woodland with bluebells in spring that genuinely stop you in your tracks. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Gransden Wood, by contrast, feels more managed and spacious, with clearer sightlines through the trees and a more relaxed walking vibe.

Walkers will find both woods reward a couple of hours' exploration, though neither demands a full day commitment. The woodland canopy is thick enough to be genuinely restorative, and there's something about the dappled light filtering through that makes you forget you're not far from the A1. Families with younger kids will cope better with Gransden's flatter terrain, while Waresley suits those who enjoy a bit of undulation and don't mind damp ground.

Both are free to access and open year-round, though spring and autumn are when they really sing. From Sandy, you're looking at a 15-20 minute drive depending on which wood you're heading for. If you're staying at Cambridgeshire Lakes nearby, these woods make an excellent morning or afternoon walk without requiring a proper expedition. They're worth the detour if you're caravan-bound in the area and fancy stretching your legs away from the campsite without driving halfway across the county.
