Ward Oak Hill

Ward Oak Hill sits above the rolling countryside between York and the Moors, a proper unassuming summit that rewards the climb with views that stretch for miles. The walk up is straightforward rather than punishing - most people will manage it in under an hour from the car park, though the final push to the actual peak does get a bit steep. Once you're there, you understand why it's worth the effort. On a clear day you can pick out York Minster in the distance, a real spine-tingler when you spot it.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a technical scramble or anything fancy, just good honest moorland terrain that asks you to use your legs. Families with reasonably fit kids can do it without drama, though toddlers might find the steeper bits annoying. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are worthwhile rather than trainers.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself - bring what you need. Access is free, and you can spend anywhere from two to four hours here depending on whether you fancy wandering the surrounding moorland. The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is only three miles away, making this a natural day out if you're based there during a park holiday. Good spot for lunch with a thermos before heading back down.
