Wandlebury Ring (Iron Age Hill Fort)

A proper Iron Age fort sits on the edge of Cambridge, commanding views across the Fens that must have been even more strategic two thousand years ago. Wandlebury Ring is what remains of that ancient settlement - concentric earthwork rings that you walk around rather than through, tracing the defensive ditches and ramparts that made this place significant enough to occupy for centuries.

The site itself is straightforward: you arrive, you walk the rings, you get a sense of how the landscape looked when this mattered. It's not a grand reconstructed experience with interpretation boards at every turn. There's something honest about that. You're reading the land rather than having it explained. The views from the top are the real draw - proper countryside spreading out toward Cambridge in one direction, rolling fields the other way. On a clear day it justifies the modest walk to get up there.

This suits people who actually enjoy archaeology and landscape reading rather than those expecting museum-style presentation. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're into hillfort design. Allow an hour maximum, longer if you're sitting about taking photos.

It's free and open whenever, which is refreshing. If you're camped at Cambridge Cherry Hinton or one of the other sites within a couple of miles, it's an easy morning excursion before heading into the city proper. Not life-changing, but a genuine link to Iron Age Cambridgeshire that most visitors to the area completely miss.
