Wanderwang Wood

Getting lost in Wanderwang Wood isn't really getting lost at all - it's a straightforward Perthshire woodland that delivers exactly what you want from a forest walk without any pretension. The paths wind through mature trees, and in autumn the ground disappears under leaves the colour of rust and burnt orange. Spring brings bluebells thick enough to make you think twice about where you step.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for families who need the kids to burn energy without needing a three-hour commitment. An hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no rush, and everyone's had fresh air and decent exercise. No café, no visitor centre - just woodland and quiet. Bring a packed lunch and claim one of the clearings if the weather's decent.

The real pull is proximity to Stirling. You can visit Wallace Monument, do the castle, then slip out here for breathing room without driving thirty miles into the Highlands. It also pairs well with a base at Craighead Howf just down the road - that caravan park gets five stars for good reason, and having woodland this accessible makes the whole area feel properly rural whilst staying close enough to proper amenities.

Going in winter when the ground's soft and there's rarely anyone about is actually when it's best. Summer weekends? Avoid. Muddy boots are part of the deal here.
