Walsworth Common

The moment you step onto Walsworth Common, you're in proper countryside - open heathland that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from Hitchin. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe, where the sky opens up and you get a real sense of what Hertfordshire looked like before the suburbs swallowed everything.

What you get here is straightforward and honest. There are walking paths threading through heather and grassland, with occasional woodland patches breaking things up. On a clear day the views stretch properly - you're not hemmed in. Birdwatchers will have a field day, especially in spring and autumn when migrants come through. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so unless the children are keen on spotting things, but if you've got teenagers who actually walk, it's ideal for letting them blow off steam without the rigmarole of a proper hiking expedition.

The best time to visit is early morning when it's quieter and you'll see more wildlife. Summer's lovely but the heather's really something in late August and September. No admission fee that we're aware of, and you can spend as little or as long as you like.

If you're based at Radwell Lake or Henlow Bridge Lakes - both solid campsite options just down the road - Walsworth Common makes a proper morning outing. It slots neatly into a holiday where you want nature without needing to drive an hour to get it.
