Walkington Plantation

The woodland at Walkington sits just outside Beverley, and it's the sort of place you might drive past without realising what's tucked away behind the treeline. This is proper working forest - Forestry Commission land with paths that wind through mature timber and younger plantings, nothing twee about it. You get a real sense of scale walking through here, especially where the conifers create that cathedral-like quiet.

It works well for families who can manage uneven ground and don't need a café at the end of it. Kids will either love the muddy trails and sense of exploration or get restless after forty minutes - depends entirely on yours. Walkers get decent mileage without the crowds you'd find elsewhere in Yorkshire. The forest changes character depending which paths you take, so it rewards a bit of wandering.

There's no entrance fee and no formal facilities to speak of, so come prepared with a packed lunch if you're making a day of it. Allow two to three hours maximum unless you're really keen on forestry. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots aren't optional.
