Walford's Gibbet

A weathered stone structure stands alone on the Somerset moorland near Holford - Walford's Gibbet, a stark reminder of 18th-century justice. This isn't a reconstructed tourist attraction with gift shop and café. It's the real thing: a proper historical monument marking where a man was executed and left as a public warning. The gibbet itself is largely gone, but the stone base and marker remain, offering a sobering glimpse into how punishment worked centuries ago.

HistoryBuffs will find it genuinely interesting, though you won't spend hours here - fifteen minutes is realistic. The location on the open moorland gives it an atmospheric quality that museum displays simply can't match. You're standing where something genuinely dark happened, which hits differently than reading about it in a book.

From Holford, it's an accessible walk if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Moorhouse Campsite and Mill Farm are both close by. Haven Doniford Bay and Secret Valley offer more facilities if you want a proper holiday base with entertainment for families. The gibbet works well as part of a broader Quantocks exploration rather than a destination in itself.

There's no visitor centre, no entry fee (as far as anyone can tell), and no facilities at the site itself. Go in daylight. Moorland weather here can turn quickly, and you don't want to be picking your way across rough ground in the dark. It's bleak and atmospheric in equal measure - exactly what you'd want from a bit of dark history.
