Wain's Hill

There's a Bronze Age settlement on this Somerset hillside that most people driving past Bristol completely miss. Wain's Hill is essentially what's left of ancient earthworks - low ridges and ditches that form the bones of a settlement from around 1000 BC. You won't find visitor facilities or even a car park; you just walk up and look at the lumps in the ground and try to imagine the roundhouses that once stood here.

It's the sort of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious history walkers rather than casual tourists. Everyone else might find themselves wondering after ten minutes why they've trudged up a muddy slope to examine some indistinct hillside features. The views across Somerset are decent enough, mind you.

Allow half an hour if you're keen, less if you just want photos. The nearest town is Bristol, which makes this an easy add-on to a city break rather than a destination in itself.
