Wading Lake

The water at Wading Lake sits glassy and still most mornings, ringed by low trees that lean in like they're keeping secrets. It's a proper working reservoir just outside Crewkerne, neither vast nor showy, but genuinely peaceful if you catch it right. You can walk the perimeter easily enough - takes about an hour depending on how often you stop - and the path is decent underfoot even after rain.

What makes it worth the trip is the birdlife. Serious twitchers come here regularly, and on a quiet day you'll understand why. Coots, grebes, the occasional heron if you're lucky. It's the kind of place where you actually notice the difference between morning and afternoon light on the water.

Families with young kids might find twenty minutes satisfying, then want to move on. Walkers will get genuine use from it though - it slots nicely into a longer ramble through the area. There's limited information about facilities online, so you'd want to check locally before heading out on a very hot day.

Wytch Wood Camping is only two miles away, which makes this a solid morning walk if you're based there. The lake won't blow your mind, but it's genuinely restful, and that counts for something on holiday. No pretension, just water and trees and decent local walking.
