Vivian's Covert

You'll need decent navigation skills to find Vivian's Covert - it's tucked away in the Northamptonshire countryside, a proper woodland patch that doesn't announce itself loudly. The forest itself is ancient and atmospheric, the kind of place where you can walk for a solid hour or more without hitting a fence or a car park. Expect mixed woodland, plenty of birdsong, and the genuine quiet that only comes when you're properly away from roads.

This works best for walkers and anyone after a serious breath of fresh air. Parents with young children might manage an hour before the novelty wears off - there's no playground here, no tea room, just trees and paths. History enthusiasts may find something of interest given Northamptonshire's medieval heritage, though there's limited interpretation on site.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though visitor facilities are minimal to non-existent. Allow at least ninety minutes to get the most from it. Spring's probably the best time - the woodland floor comes alive and the light filters through properly. Winter's muddy and dense.
