Viewlands Reservoir Park

The water at Viewlands sits dead calm most mornings, and that's when you'll see why locals bother making the short drive from Perth. It's a proper working reservoir - not one of those manicured affairs - which means the birdwatching here is genuinely excellent. Bring binoculars and you've got a decent shot at spotting wildfowl, particularly in autumn and winter when migration patterns kick in.

You get a circuit walk around the perimeter, nothing too demanding but enough to stretch your legs for an hour or so. The paths are well-maintained, though they can get muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are sensible. There's a real sense of being away from things even though you're minutes from the city.

History types might find it less gripping than other Perthshire attractions, but families with kids who like spotting birds will get something out of it. Don't expect visitor facilities - this is nature reserve, not theme park. Admission appears to be free, and it's the sort of place you can rock up anytime.
