Vestey Wood

Walk into Vestey Wood and you're immediately away from Cambridge's bustle - proper woodland, with enough space that you don't feel crowded even on weekends. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birds rather than traffic, which is rarer than it should be around here.

The woodland itself is straightforward: mixed trees, decent paths, nothing fancy. You get roughly an hour if you're ambling, longer if you stop to actually look at things. Kids will enjoy it without complaint, though they won't be entertained endlessly - this isn't an adventure playground. It's genuinely quiet woodland walking, which some families will find restorative and others might find a touch dull depending on age.

What makes it worthwhile is its position. You're far enough from Cambridge to feel like a proper escape, but close enough that it works as an afternoon diversion rather than a full day commitment. If you're staying at HappenOak Treehouse just down the road, this is an obvious choice for a morning wander before heading back for lunch.

The forest is free to enter and there's no faffing about with opening times. Go when you want. Spring's decent when the undergrowth isn't completely swallowing the paths, and autumn's genuinely lovely if the weather holds. Summer can be a bit close and buggy. Winter is fine if you don't mind muddy boots.

It's not going to blow your mind, but that's almost the point. Sometimes a straightforward woodland walk is exactly what you need.
