Venonae Roman Settlement

The Romans left their mark all over Britain, but most of it's buried. At Venonae, near Rugby in Leicestershire, you can actually walk where they did - the remains of a proper Roman settlement sit quietly in the countryside, waiting for anyone curious enough to find them.

What's here is largely earthworks and archaeology rather than standing ruins. You'll see the outline of the fort, fragments of what was once a significant military outpost on the road between Leicester and Towcester. It's not dramatic - no arches, no mosaics on display - but that's partly the appeal. This is archaeology as it actually exists most of the time: subtle bumps in a field that tell a story if you know how to read them.

This works best for walkers with an interest in Roman Britain or local history buffs. If your kids demand "something to see" they might get restless after twenty minutes. The site itself is free to visit, though you'll need to find it yourself - facilities are minimal and information boards are sparse. Allow an hour or so, longer if you're the type to sit and really absorb the place.

Parking near Rugby gives you easy access to Venonae, and several leisure parks dot the area - 5 Ways Lakes and Fortway Farm Leisure are both within a few miles if you're basing yourself here for a park holiday. It's the sort of stop that works well alongside walks around the Leicestershire countryside rather than as a destination in itself.
