Vane Coppice

The woodland paths at Vane Coppice wind through proper old-growth forest, the kind where you actually feel like you've left the Coalbrookdale area behind even though you're only minutes away. Ancient oaks and dense undergrowth create real shade - brilliant if you visit in summer when the heat gets sticky. You're walking through working woodland here, not some manicured nature reserve, which means it changes with the seasons in ways that matter.

This is fundamentally a place for walkers who want an actual forest experience rather than a circular trail with numbered waypoints. The paths are well-trodden but unmarked, so go with a decent map or local knowledge. It's the sort of spot where you might see deer, certainly plenty of birds, and in autumn the floor becomes a thick carpet of leaves that changes your footing entirely. Kids will get something out of it if they're old enough to walk for 45 minutes to an hour without needing constant stimulation.

Irongorge Camping sits barely a mile away, so if you're staying there, Vane Coppice is an obvious addition to a morning walk before breakfast gets too late. The wider area - Coalbrookdale itself, with its industrial heritage trails and the River Severn - means you can easily spend a day combining woodland with something more structured. No visitor facilities to speak of here, so come equipped with water and proper footwear. Free access, open dawn to dusk as these places usually are.
