Vale of Rheidol Railway

The narrow-gauge railway line that clings to the Rheidol Valley is a proper throwback - steam locomotives hauling Victorian-era carriages through twelve miles of Welsh countryside that feels like you've stepped into a different century entirely. You board in Aberystwyth and spend an hour rattling uphill to Devil's Bridge, passing through dense woodland, over spectacular viaducts, and alongside the river as it tumbles through gorges that'd cost you a fortune in admission fees if they charged by the view.

It's brilliant for families with kids old enough to sit still for ninety minutes - the journey itself is the attraction, not some theme park gimmick. The railway's been running since 1902, so there's genuine heritage here rather than manufactured nostalgia. On a clear day the Cardigan Bay views on the way up are worth the ticket alone. Bring a camera; the viaducts photograph like something from a model railway set, except you're actually on them.

Plan for a full morning or afternoon depending on whether you want to explore Devil's Bridge itself - the waterfall and walks there add another couple of hours. The journey's not cheap and it can get rammed during school holidays, so go mid-week if you can. Several of the holiday parks near Aberystwyth - Clarach Bay and Aber Bay are within striking distance - make it an easy morning outing without the drive hassle. The steam and the gradients mean it's genuinely slow travel in the best sense.
