Vachery Pond

The water here is properly still on a quiet morning, reflecting the treeline like a mirror. Vachery Pond sits just outside Horsham, a modest freshwater lake that works best as a gentle walk rather than a destination you'd drive hours to reach. Locals use it for fishing - pike and perch mostly - and the banks are accessible enough for a straightforward circuit, though nothing dramatic or especially long.

It's the sort of place families with young children won't find thrilling for more than an hour, but walkers doing a broader loop through the Surrey countryside will find it worth pausing at. The pond has a quiet, working feel to it rather than the manicured-park vibe. If you're camped at Care Ashore or Glamping Holiday nearby, both just under three miles away, Vachery Pond makes a realistic morning outing before heading elsewhere. Riverside Farm and Sussex Topiary are similarly close, so it slots into a walking day without faffing about.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no cafe, no facilities, just the pond itself and whatever banks are passable. Go early if weather's been wet, as it can get boggy along parts of the edge. Free to visit, obviously. The real strength here is that it's genuinely quiet, properly rural, and doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - a pond where people fish and walkers pass through. Not Instagram-worthy, but real.
