Urquhart Law

The walk up Urquhart Law takes about forty minutes from the car park near Dunfermline, and the views across Fife make every steep bit worth it. It's not a massive hill - 266 metres - but the path gets properly boggy in places, so decent boots matter. On a clear day you can see right across to the Forth and beyond, which is genuinely spectacular.

This is one for walkers who like a bit of substance without needing technical kit. Families with older kids manage it fine, though younger legs might find the final push frustrating. There's an Iron Age fort on top - just earthworks now, nothing dramatic - but the archaeology adds a proper point to the climb beyond just bagging another hill. The crater-like summit gives you 360-degree views that don't get old.

Timing-wise, give yourself two hours all in. Go when it's not raining if you can, because the bog is genuinely treacherous when wet. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer crowds can make the path feel trampled, and winter often makes it impassable without serious winter gear.

It's close enough to do before lunch, leaving the afternoon free for exploring Dunfermline itself or pushing on to other Fife walks. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area.
