Upwell Playing Field

The playing field at Upwell doesn't announce itself as a nature reserve, which is rather the point. You're in that flat, drained landscape east of Wisbech where the land seems to stretch endlessly and the sky dominates everything. What makes this place special is the water - dykes and channels that cut through what was once proper marshland.

It's a quiet spot for spotting birds without the crowds you'd get at the better-known reserves. Warblers in summer, occasional raptors, and if you're lucky with the light, the whole place takes on a lovely quality that photographs never quite capture. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though younger kids might struggle with the flatness of it all - there's no drama, no views that surprise.

Walkers come here more than anyone else, particularly those exploring the Fenland on foot or cycling. It's free and there's no formal opening hours, which means you can drop in whenever. Allow an hour or so if you're serious about birdwatching, less if you just fancy a stroll. Bring binoculars and wellies - the ground can be boggy depending on recent rain.

Locally, Westerby Farm Camping and Glamping sits just over a mile away, making this a decent addition to a wider Fenland park holiday. It won't be the highlight of a week-long trip, but it's the sort of place that grows on you - particularly if you've got time to kill and appreciate landscape in its quieter forms.
