Upwell Methodist Church

A red-brick Methodist chapel standing quietly on the edge of Upwell, just east of Wisbech, this is the sort of place you'd miss if you weren't looking for it. The church dates back to 1839 and speaks to a particular moment in English religious life - the chapel boom of the Victorian era, when Methodism was genuinely a mass movement. The building itself is modest, functional, no-frills architecture: red brick, sash windows, the sort of chapel you'd find dotted across Norfolk and the Fens.

Inside, it's intimate rather than grand. There's a proper sense of the congregation that once filled these pews - working people, farmers, traders from the surrounding villages. The craftsmanship is there if you look: woodwork, plasterwork, the bones of 19th-century nonconformist faith. It's the sort of building that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick photo stop.

Not for everyone, obviously. If you're after theatrical grandeur or celebrity history, move on. But if you're interested in how ordinary people worshipped, or you're doing a circuit of Fenland architecture, it's worth the detour. The setting itself - flat landscape, big skies, proper rural Norfolk - makes it feel rather more significant than its size suggests.
