Upper Nene Valley Country Park

The Upper Nene Valley stretches across Northamptonshire like a ribbon of water and wetland that most people driving the A45 never even notice. Once you're in, though, you realise what they're missing. This is proper nature reserve territory - reed beds, open water, woodland edges, the sort of place where you actually see wildlife rather than just hoping you might.

The park works brilliantly for families with older kids and anyone serious about birdwatching. Bring binoculars and a field guide, because you'll spot kingfishers, great crested grebes, and if you're lucky, marsh harriers hunting over the water. There are walking trails that don't demand fell-running fitness, though some paths get muddy after rain, so waterproof boots make sense. The best time is early morning or dusk when birds are most active, particularly spring and autumn when migration makes for proper good watching.

It's a free admission site, which is brilliant, and you can spend anywhere from two hours doing a gentle loop to half a day if you're serious about it. The whole place sits just a few miles south of Northampton, making it an easy detour if you're staying at Magic Mushroom Cabin or elsewhere in the area. There's space to breathe here without it feeling touristy or overrun. Not spectacular in the dramatic sense, but exactly the kind of local nature spot that reminds you why the East Midlands has more green space than its reputation suggests.
