Uffington Recreation Ground

The Uffington Recreation Ground sits just outside Wantage and is exactly the sort of local patch that rewards a proper wander. It's a modest nature reserve - nothing flashy - but it does what it promises: gives you a quiet place to stretch your legs and spot a bit of wildlife without fighting crowds.

The ground itself is open grassland with some woodland edges, the kind of place where you'll see rabbits bolting across the field and hear woodpeckers if you're lucky. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's genuine English countryside. The walking is straightforward and flat enough for families with younger kids, though there's enough space to work up a decent stride if you fancy it. Allow an hour or so for a leisurely loop.

Historians might recognise the name from Uffington's more famous neighbour - the White Horse hill fort is nearby - but this reserve stands on its own merits as a local haunt rather than a major attraction. That's rather the point. If you're staying at Evelyns Garden Glamping or The Real Campsite nearby, this is the kind of place you'd visit on a quiet afternoon when you want to get off site without driving far.

Free access, no fees that I'm aware of. Best in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are out and birds are actively nesting. Winter can feel a bit bleak. It's a solid addition to a park holiday itinerary if you're based locally - not something to plan a trip around, but well worth knowing about if you're in the area.
