Uckerby Lake

The water here is genuinely still - the sort of stillness that makes you stop talking without meaning to. Uckerby Lake sits just outside Richmond in North Yorkshire, a modest expanse of water that won't knock you sideways but works brilliantly if you're after a proper walk with a focal point rather than just tramping through countryside for the sake of it.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers more than sightseers. There's a decent circuit around the perimeter, nothing taxing, and you'll spot waterfowl if you're patient. The banks are accessible rather than dramatic - no great cliffs or vistas that'll make you gasp - but that's precisely why families with younger legs find it manageable. An hour covers it thoroughly; two hours if you're the sort who stops to sketch or photograph everything.

Free to visit, no facilities that I could find on site. Go in spring when the water's properly alive, or autumn when the light does something special. Summer can feel a bit flat and overexposed.

If you're staying at Kiplin Country Park just down the road, this makes a straightforward morning outing before heading into Richmond itself. It doesn't warrant a special journey from elsewhere, but as part of a North Yorkshire park holiday it fills the gap between bigger attractions nicely. Not essential, but solid for what it is - a local walk that actually rewards the effort.
