Uckerby Fox Covert

The canopy here is dense enough that you'll feel properly enclosed the moment you step in from the surrounding farmland near Richmond. Uckerby Fox Covert is a working woodland - not a manicured forest park with picnic tables and interpretation boards, but the real thing. Beech and oak dominate, with a decent undergrowth that shifts through the seasons. Footpaths thread through without too much fuss, though they can get boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's quiet - you're unlikely to bump into crowds - and the trees muffle the outside world in a way that's genuinely restorative. The walk itself isn't strenuous; you can cover the whole covert in an hour if you're moving, or take twice as long if you're the sort to stop and listen. Spring brings bluebells and birdsong. Autumn is when it earns its keep, with fungi poking through the leaf litter and the canopy turning russet.

There's no visitor centre or facilities as far as I can tell - this is a straightforward woodland walk, free to access. If you're staying at Kiplin Country Park just down the road, it makes a natural addition to a morning's exploring. It won't occupy your entire day, but it fills a gap well between bigger attractions. Don't expect drama or spectacle. What you get is what woodlands do best - space to think and a proper sense of being away from things.
