Tyler Hundred Park

The Thames estuary can feel a bit bleak in winter, all grey water and industrial sprawl, but Tyler Hundred Park changes that impression entirely. This nature reserve sits just inland from Tilbury, protecting a stretch of grassland and wetland that's genuinely surprising given how built-up the surrounding area is.

It's a proper spot for birdwatchers - the marshes draw waders and wildfowl, especially during migration seasons. Winter brings visiting geese; spring is loud with nesting birds. The walking is straightforward, nothing taxing, just paths through open country with decent views across the estuary if you pick the right vantage points.

Families with young kids won't be thrilled for more than an hour unless they're seriously into spotting things with binoculars. But if you're based at Thamesview Camping nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving far, it fills that gap well. Older children and adults who like a quiet walk in working wetland habitat will appreciate it more.

The reserve is free to access, though facilities are minimal - there's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. Best visited outside peak summer when you're not battling the heat and the paths are clearer. It's the sort of place that proves Essex nature reserves are worth your time if you know where to look.
