Twynham Church

The church dominates Christchurch's high street, and you can't miss it - a proper medieval fortress of stone that makes you understand why people built upwards when they meant business. Twynham Church (that's what locals still call it, despite the official name change centuries back) sits at the heart of the town with an imposing tower that's been keeping watch since the 12th century.

What strikes you first is the sheer scale of the place. This isn't a modest parish church - the nave is genuinely cathedral-like, all soaring arches and light flooding through the windows. Inside, you'll find a jumble of architectural periods, from Norman pillars to later additions that show what each generation thought mattered. The stone work is absorbing if you're into that sort of detail, and there's enough here to keep architecture enthusiasts occupied for a good hour.

It works best for history types and anyone interested in how medieval communities organised themselves around their church. Kids under ten will probably get restless unless you frame it as a treasure hunt - spot the Norman arches, find the oldest stonework, that sort of thing.

The location is useful for a New Forest break. Holmsley Campsite is just five miles away, making this an easy afternoon stop between walks or a morning visit before heading into the forest proper.
