Twists Covert

The woodland paths at Twists Covert wind through proper Lancashire forest - the kind of place where you can actually lose the sound of the main road after about five minutes. It's a small forest near Blowick, dense enough to feel genuinely removed from the flat agricultural land surrounding it. The trees are thick here, and in autumn the floor gets carpeted with beech leaves in a way that makes you forget you're still in the North West.

This works best for walkers who don't need drama or vistas - it's intimate rather than showy. The paths are well-trodden but nothing challenging. Kids will enjoy the sense of being in actual woodland, though there's nothing specific laid on for them, so they need to entertain themselves spotting trees and jumping in leaf piles. Birdwatchers might find it decent, though it's not a destination in itself.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could establish, so arrive prepared. It's free to walk, and you can spend anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours depending on how thoroughly you explore the interior paths. Spring is probably best - everything's alive and the light comes through differently. Summer gets a bit muggy and dense.

If you're staying at Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Twists Covert makes a decent leg-stretcher on a morning walk. Don't expect it to anchor a day trip on its own, but as part of a broader Lancashire coast outing, it's well worth the detour.
