Tunnel Centre

The Tunnel Centre sits just outside Chepstow and tells the story of the Wye Valley Railway - specifically the engineering marvel that was Tyndall Street Tunnel. It's a small museum, unpretentious and locally run, housed where the old railway works once stood.

Inside you'll find photographs, artefacts and information about the Victorian engineers who blasted through solid rock to create the tunnel. If you're into industrial history or railways, this hits the mark. The level of detail surprised me - they've clearly done their homework on the local significance of the project. Families with older children interested in how things were built will find it engaging; younger kids might clock out after twenty minutes unless you're pushing the educational angle hard.

The museum gives real context to what you're seeing if you walk the old railway path afterwards - and you should. Knowing the engineering backstory makes standing beneath those tunnel arches properly atmospheric. The whole visit takes roughly an hour with a decent look around.

Chepstow itself is worth a half-day anyway, and if you're based at Penhein Glamping nearby, the Tunnel Centre makes a decent rainy-day filler or a way to add substance to a morning before heading elsewhere. It's free admission, which helps when attractions of this size could easily charge a tenner. Go if you're passing through the area with a specific interest; don't go if you're just ticking boxes.
