Tumulus

You'll find yourself standing on a Bronze Age burial mound just outside Blairgowrie, staring at what amounts to a grassy hummock in the Perthshire landscape. It doesn't look like much at first - until you realise you're looking at someone's grave from around 2,000 years ago. That's the appeal of Tumulus: it's properly ancient, minimal fuss, and free to visit whenever you fancy.

The site itself is straightforward. You get a Bronze Age burial mound, some interpretive information if you're lucky, and views across the surrounding countryside. It takes twenty minutes maximum, so don't plan your whole day around it. What makes it work is the directness of it - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just archaeology doing its job.

History enthusiasts will appreciate what it represents, even if the structure itself won't wow you visually. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on archaeology. Walkers using the area will find it a decent waypoint rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Five Roads Caravan Park or Nethercraig Holiday Park - both excellent bases - Tumulus is close enough for a morning ramble. Pair it with proper walks in the surrounding hills rather than treating it as a standalone attraction. The landscape around Blairgowrie has far more to offer than the mound itself, but if you're here anyway, it's worth the detour.
