Tòrr na Bithe

The walk up Tòrr na Bithe rewards you with proper views across the far northwest corner of Scotland. It's a modest hill by Highlands standards - nothing that'll have you gasping for breath - but the vantage point over Durness and the surrounding moorland is genuinely worth the effort.

Getting up there takes maybe an hour from Durness itself, depending on your fitness and how much you dawdle. The path isn't marked brilliantly, so an OS map or a decent sat nav app is essential. There's a real sense of remoteness up top, which is rather the point of coming this far north. On a clear day you can see for miles across heather and bog toward the coast.

It's the kind of walk that suits anyone reasonably fit who wants a taste of Highland scenery without committing to something massive. Families with older kids will manage fine. Those after a proper day hike might find it a bit quick, but combine it with exploring Durness itself - the beaches, the rock formations, that sort of thing - and you've got a cracking afternoon.

If you're based at Sango Sands Oasis just down the road, this is a natural half-day excursion. The holiday park is well-positioned for exploring this corner of the map, and Tòrr na Bithe slots in nicely alongside coastal walks and village exploring. Free to visit, obviously. Go when the midges aren't too vicious - spring or autumn are your best bets.
