Trout Lake

A proper moorland lake sitting high on Dartmoor near Okehampton, Trout Lake is exactly what its name suggests - a fishing spot first, but also a decent walking destination if you're in the area. The water's cold and dark, ringed by rough grass and gorse, with views that stretch across the moor when the weather plays ball. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy; what you get is the real, windswept character of Dartmoor itself.

Walkers and fishing types are the main crowd here. If you're serious about trout, this is your day out. If you're just passing through on a moorland ramble, it's worth the detour for a proper wild-water moment - no cafes, no crowds, no fuss. The walk in varies depending on where you park, but reckon on 30 minutes to an hour to reach the lake itself. Go on a clear day; moorland mist renders everything a bit featureless.

The nearest proper base is Okehampton, about five miles away. If you're after something with a bit more character, Wolf Wood Treehouses is tucked nearby and makes for an unusual stay - actual treehouses rather than static caravans, which changes the whole feel of a holiday. Combine Trout Lake with longer walks across the moor and you've got a solid day. Don't expect facilities - bring water and wear proper boots. It's moorland, unvarnished.
